چکیده

The International Space Station offers a unique platform for rapid and inexpensive deployment of space telescopes. A scientific opportunity of great potential later this decade is the use of telescopes for the electromagnetic follow-up of ground-based gravitational wave detections of neutron star and black hole mergers. We describe this possibility for OpTIIX, an ISS technology demonstration of a 1.5 m diffraction limited optical telescope assembled in space, and ISS-Lobster, a widefield imaging X-ray telescope now under study as a potential NASA mission. Both telescopes will be mounted on pointing platforms, allowing rapid positioning to the source of a gravitational wave event. Electromagnetic follow-up rates of several per year appear likely, offering a wealth of complementary science on the mergers of black holes and neutron stars.

The mergers of double neutron star (NS-NS) and black hole (BH)-NS binaries are promising gravitational wave (GW) sources for Advanced LIGO and future GW detectors. The neutron-rich ejecta from such merger events undergoes rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis, enriching our Galaxy with rare heavy elements like gold and platinum. The radioactive decay of these unstable nuclei also po...

The Fate of Neutron Star Binary Mergers

Following merger, a neutron star (NS) binary can produce roughly one of three different outcomes: (1) a stable NS, (2) a black hole (BH), or (3) a supra-massive, rotationally-supported NS, which then collapses to a BH following angular momentum losses. Which of these fates occur and in what proportion has important implications for the electromagnetic transient associated with the mergers and t...

Short Gamma-ray Bursts and Binary Mergers in Spiral and Elliptical Galaxies: Redshift Distribution and Hosts

To critically assess the binary compact object merger model for short gamma ray bursts (GRBs) – specifically, to test whether the short GRB rates, redshift distribution and host galaxies are consistent with current theoretical predictions – it is necessary to examine models that account for the high-redshift, heterogeneous universe (accounting for both spirals and ellipticals). We present an in...

Based on evolutionary scenarios for binary stellar evolution we study the merging rates of relativistic binary stars (NS+NS, NS+BH, BH+BH) under different assumptions of BH formation. We find the BH+BH merging rate in the range one per 200,000 – 500,000 year in a Milky-Way type galaxy, while the NS+NS merging rate Rns is approximately 10 times as high, which means that the expected event rate e...
